Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council has appointed Alan Jones to the post of Project Co-ordinator (Leisure) on a two year fixed contract, effective from 1 December. His role will be to co-ordinate the expansion and improvement in sport and recreation facilities within the Borough, in line with the needs and aspirations of the local community, which are currently being determined via an extensive consultation exercise.
A local man, born and bred in Shrewsbury, Alan went to teacher training college before returning to Shrewsbury to teach physical education at the Belvidere and Wakeman Schools, before moving on to Ludlow School as Deputy Head in the mid eighties, from where he retired from teaching in 1994
While he is particularly well known for his work in football development within the County of Shropshire over the past thirty five years and, more recently, his lead role in setting up Shrewsbury Town Football Club’s Youth and Community Programme. He has considerable experience working with communities in setting up both multi use sports facilities and general sports development programmes. Between 1994 and 1996, whilst working part time for Shropshire County Council’s Sport and Recreation Department, he spent time working on several community projects to enhance the provision of local sporting facilities and which included the successful outcomes at Lakelands School, Ellesmere and Sir John Talbot’s School, Whitchurch.
More recently he has been involved in a number of other projects; working in a voluntary capacity, including Ludlow Town Football Club’s successful £1 million application to the Football Foundation to provide for a new stadium and, closer to home, working on behalf of Shropshire Schools and Colleges FA in partnership with Shrewsbury Leisure, to deliver the recent extension to the synthetic pitch at the Monkmoor Recreation Centre.
Alan Wallin, the Borough Council’s Leisure Services Manager, commented
"Those who know Alan, and many do, will agree that he has immense energy and focused tenacity. He also has excellent organisational and communication skills and a proven track record in delivering successful outcomes. He has a wide interest in sports development and a sympathetic approach towards the needs of all members of the sporting community - as demonstrated by his work with the communities of Ludlow and Ellesmere. I am confident that a good appointment has been made, for which the residents of the Borough will reap the benefits over many years to come."
