As part of Shrewsbury's 2005 Heart of England in Bloom activities, residents and Schools across the Borough are being invited to take part in an innovative new Henna design competition that celebrates the history of the town with a contemporary twist.
Developed in conjunction with Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council and local Henna Artist Catharine Hinton, the competition will see budding artists creating designs that can be reproduced as natural temporary body art. You don't have to be technically brilliant - we're looking for designs and ideas that sum up Shrewsbury 'In Bloom' or 'Darwin'!
Adorning the body with henna has been a custom in many countries for thousands of years. A traditional remedy for skin conditions and cooling the body in hot weather, henna is also a fascinating and beautiful way to decorate the skin. Henna and the whole ethnic ethos is very much in fashion this summer. This resurge in popularity is something that we hope will encourage people of all ages to take part in the competition and give them the opportunity to win some of the fabulous prizes that are on offer!
Split into three age categories: 10 years and under, 11 - 17 years and 18 +, the competition will be open to people from the general public as well as in Primary and Secondary schools in the Borough. Supported by SABC and a wide range of local businesses, people within each category will have the opportunity to win a whole host of amazing prizes, ranging from tickets to local attractions, to vouchers entitling them to meals out, designer clothing and even a VIP party for themselves and their friends!
There are two design categories: Charles Darwin or Britain in Bloom, entrants are asked to produce a piece of artwork that is identifiable with one or both of the design categories. Participants are asked to produce a design(s) that could be recreated in Henna on the hand, foot or another part of the body. As part of the prize, winners will have the opportunity to have their own creation Hennaed onto them at an official prize giving ceremony.
Competition organisers hope that this fresh and original competition idea will inspire people of all ages within the town to unleash their creative potential.
