Shrewsbury Northern Corridor Regeneration Study -
steering group established

Release Date: 8 February 2006
The north-east part of Shrewsbury and in particular the transport corridor between Battlefield roundabout and the town centre, is to be the subject of a comprehensive planning, transport and regeneration study.

Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council is commissioning the study with the support of Shropshire County Council and Advantage West Midlands.  A Steering Group has already been established and agreed their terms of reference and the brief for the consultants.

Councillor Malcolm Price, Planning Portfolio holder for the Borough Council, has been appointed Chairman of the Group.  He says:

"I am delighted that the Steering Group has been formed so that we can start to tackle some of the planning and regeneration issues in north Shrewsbury, such as the redevelopment of some of the derelict sites in the area and in revitalising the local economy.  The Group has a strong membership which includes local borough and county councillors, Peter Bettis (of Caterpillar) for the Business Chamber, Toby Shaw (of Towler Shaw Roberts) for the property and development sector, Peter Dunhill, Chair of the Castlefields Action Team and Tim Baldwin, Advantage West Midlands.  The work we are asking the consultants to carry out will lead to an action plan for the visual enhancement of the corridor, recommend proposals for improvements to the physical infrastructure, provide traffic management and transport solutions, develop community infrastructure and identify development opportunities as part of our statutory Local Development Framework."

Peter Jarratt, Director of Development Services says:

"The Borough Council is currently inviting tenders for the consultancy work and it is expected that this will lead to an appointment in early April with the work being carried out over a twelve month period.  We expect a lot of public interest in the study, so we have set up a web page at www.shrewsbury.gov.uk/NCRS where people can access information on the study including Steering Group minutes and the Consultants' Brief."
