Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council are delighted to have selected Bluestone plc of Birmingham as the main contractors for the construction of the new Shrewsbury Sports Village. Bluestone has an office in Shrewsbury and will be working with Kestrel Golf and Sport appointed expert contractors for the pitches.
Organised sporting activities on the existing sports facility at Sundorne have now ceased although the area will then remain accessible for informal play until mid April 2005 after which Bluestone will take possession of the site and commence fencing it off ready for work to begin.
Construction work is due to commence in May 2005, with completion of all elements other than the pitches, for opening early in 2006. Due to health and safety constraints the site will be closed to the public throughout the construction period - May 2005 - Feb/March 2006.
The Martial Arts centre will remain operational during this period although take care when accessing the car park.
The community woodland at the rear of the site will remain available for community use as will the land at the rear of the Territorial Army centre These areas can be accessed on foot via the canal towpath and cycle route 81 or via Montgomery Way.
Alternative pitches for juniors are being set up at the West Mids Show ground, with adult and Sunday League play due to transfer to London Road for a temporary period until the start on the 2006/07 football season.
Alan Wallin, Leisure and Community Development Manager, says
"Whilst the development will no doubt cause some inconvenience to users of the site this is a spectacular and exciting development for Shrewsbury and one that will provide much needed superior leisure and sporting facilities for the people of this town. We would ask that residents please bear with the contractors and the Council as we deliver this exciting project."
